Sigiriya

                                                              SIGIRIYA

Long ago a king named Datusena of Anuradhapura had two sons named Mogallana and Kashyana.  Kasyapa was younger than Moggallana but he wanted to be king first.  So he killed his father and became king.  King Moggallana became very angry.  He wanted to kill Kashyapa and become king.

So Kasyapa moved away from Anuradhapura and built a beautiful palace on a rock.  No one was able to catch him or kill him.  This rock was known as Sigiriya. He built many beautiful buildings on Sigiriya and painted beautiful paintings on both sides of the rock. We can still see some pictures and ruins of some of the buildings.  On the west side of the rock is an oil garden, which has a symmetrical plan.

The park has water retention structures including complex surface sub-surface hydraulic systems.  Some of them are still active today.  The south contains a man-made reservoir.  There are five entrances.I like sigiriya.

The city was extensively fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century.  Galle Fort, Unawatuna, the beach, Hikkaduwa coral reefs and the famous Seenigama Devalaya are some of the famous places of worship.                                            My favorite place in Ga...
